Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge 2006
New Zealand
By Simon Kellam. CVCC

If anyone happens to be in New Zealand on their travels during the month of November then this ‘sportive’ type event is well worth at having a bash at. This year there were 12,ooo + riders! It’s a massive event and very well organized.
Although your rides are timed with transponders, it is not classed as a race, but as you know its hard for most competitive riders not to. Everyone has their own personal goals to try and achieve.
The event has big sponsorship and there are many spot prizes up for grabs for the competitors. This year the top prize was a Nissan 4x4 with Speedboat attached!

General Information

The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge began in 1977 and it is now one of New Zealand's most popular sporting events. It is a non-competitive bike ride around New Zealand's largest lake, Lake Taupo, a distance of 160 km. There are seven different Challenges; the Solo riders' 160 km Challenge (which includes Tandem riders), the 160 km Tarmac Relay (2, 3 or 4 riders), the 174 km Dirt & Tarmac Relay (3, 4 or 5 riders) which include an MTB rider in the team, a 320 km twice round the lake Enduro and a 640 km Maxi Enduro. There is also a 160 km Classic Race component for the elite rider. For the younger ones we have the 5 km Heart Ride. There is a carnival atmosphere at the finish.
